Funding

Many students receive assistantships that are merit-based and, after the first semester, performance-based. Graduate assistants work with faculty for 20 hours a week as a teaching assistant or a research assistant. Assistantships pay a stipend up to $6,000 per semester (as of fall 2024). A limited number of out-of-state tuition remissions are also available on a competitive basis. All qualified applicants are automatically considered.

The Department of History looks to award 10 graduate scholarships annually. Amounts for the award vary annually, as they are based on market gains. Multiple awards for each opportunity may be awarded based on spendable balances. Many applications have stated themes, and in addition to forms filled out online are based on the submission of either a) a proposal idea, b) an essay, or, c) based on GPA. All scholarship applications must be made to the ECU scholarship portal, AcademicWorks, and the scholarship form must be completed for proposal or essay-based applications. Proposal-based applications must be signed by a thesis adviser (GPA-based and essay-based applications do not need an adviser signature).
